Photography Blogtorial #1 - Rule of Thirds

The Rule of Thirds is used not only in photography but in all forms of art. Some people use it naturally without knowing why or what they are doing. These people are sometimes referred to as Naturally Artistic. The Rule of Thirds is simple and once you know it and apply it to your photography, you will find your images more aesthetically pleasing.

Simply put, the image is divided into thirds vertically as well as horizontally. Each point that intersects creates a quadrant where the main focus of your image should fall.

In images with a horizon, let it fall on one of the horizontal lines and you will never go wrong. Avoid bisecting your image with a horizon smack dab in the middle. This is unbalanced and distracting.

With people, when they are father away in the image, put them into one of the two vertical line areas. If it is a close-up, try to place the face or eyes into one of the intersections and you will find your images begin to be balanced and look more professional looking.

The placement of your subject(s) does not have to be exactly over the intersection. This rule is a guide and the intersections are not a single point but a SECTION that should be subject heavy.

Good Luck!
